What is a vocation?

A vocation is a calling from God which invites the person to serve him in some special way. For example, religious ministry, monastic life, missionary work, marriage etc. Ultimately, a vocation by God is a deeply personal and spiritual belief that one's life and work are guided and influenced by a divine purpose or calling.

A Conventual Franciscan Vocation

The Conventual Franciscans are a community of friars dedicated to living out the Gospel values of St. Francis of Assisi. Are you searching for a deeper purpose in life? Do you feel called to serve others and to live a life of prayer, community, and simplicity? If so, explore your vocation with us and join the Franciscan Conventual family.

Aspirant and Discernment

You will have the opportunity to develop relationships with our friars during this period. This involves attending "come and see weekends" and meeting other young men in similar situations. Occasionally, you may even stay with us for a week, participating in our daily activities such as prayer, Mass, work, and ministry.

Postulancy

During the first stage of becoming a friar, one will reside at a friary for approximately one year. This provides an opportunity to experience community living and engage in prayer and work. The time spent in prayer allows for reflection on one's calling and the ability to listen to the guidance of God. Additionally, classes will be provided to learn about St Francis, the conventual Franciscans, and the life of a religious. Pastoral ministries will also be a part of the postulancy experience.

Novitiate

During the Novitiate year, you will have the opportunity to engage in structured prayer and ministry as you deepen your discernment. It all begins with investiture, a significant ceremony where you will receive the Franciscan conventual habit. Your schedule will include more classes on the way of life of a friar, including study of the rule and testament of St Francis, the constitutions, Franciscan prayer, and the writings of St Francis. Additionally, you will learn about the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Your Novice Master will be available to guide you through the discernment process and meet with you regularly.

Post novitiate

After the Novitiate year, further preparation takes place in the formation house for those pursuing priesthood or brotherhood. Living in simple vows for three years is required before preparing for solemn profession, a lifelong commitment to God and the conventual order. Studies continue for both paths until ordination or readiness to serve as a brother.
